Coronavirus: Scientists discover frequent progression of COVID-19 symptoms

Scientists at the University of Southern California have found that there is a progression of symptoms in many COVID-19 cases.

The order in which the symptoms tend to appear are:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

The study was led by doctoral candidate Joseph Larsen as well as advisors at the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience’s Convergent Science Institute in Cancer.

It was published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health.

By knowing the progression of the illness, doctors can see what steps are needed to prevent the sickness from getting worse, study authors said.

Researchers looked at data from more than 55,000 cases in China collected from Feb. 16 to 24. They also looked at data from 1,100 cases in China collected from Dec. 11 to Jan. 29.
