In a news release, the Portland Police Bureau said that an officer noticed two vehicles speeding out of a fast-food restaurant’s parking lot just before 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 6. The officer ran a check on one of the vehicles, which was registered as stolen.

The officer followed the vehicle, which she described as “driving erratically,” until the driver stopped. When the officer approached the vehicle, she discovered the driver was 10 years old and their passenger was 13.

Police said the two children were released into the custody of their guardians. The Kia’s owner retrieved the car, which had a damaged ignition and broken back passenger window, The Oregonian reported.

Police did not identify the children or say whether any charges would be filed.
