Seattle 911 service restored after brief outage

SEATTLE — Seattle’s 911 system went down briefly early Wednesday, and it’s not the first time there’s been problems.

A tweet  from the Seattle Police Department at 3:40 a.m. let people know their 911 system was down and that they should call an alternate number if they had an emergency.  It was back up by 4 a.m.

In May, KIRO 7 reported that the system sometimes freezes several times in a week, causing dispatchers have to reboot the system.  As a result, people calling 911 would get busy signals.

In addition, staffing at the Seattle 911 communications center has stayed the same, despite the booming population in the city and 911 calls to SPD.

The outage only affected the Seattle Police Department’s 911 system and not King County's.

Seattle police tweeted that they are investigating what caused the problem.
