SEATTLE — Seattle police have arrested two 15-year-old boys they say are behind more than a dozen car thefts from car dealerships in the Lake City Way area.
Police arrested one teen after spotting him and two others lurking at the Bill Pierre Chevy dealership.
They said he confessed to stealing more than a dozen vehicles.
Days later, police said another one of the teens boldly broke into Maharaja Motors.
Early the morning of Oct.19, surveillance video shows him breaking through glass and going through rooms, grabbing keys.
Owner Sonny Khurana said when the alarm sounded and police responded, he hid under a car, but finally came out.
“With half the Seattle police all around!” Khurana said. “I don't think he was wearing a jacket, so he was very cold.”
Police said he confessed to other thefts, including crashing an $80,000 Camaro through a dealership’s doors before leaving it a few blocks away.
His mother brought him back to Khurana to apologize.
“He was crying and he said, ‘I’m sorry,’” he said. “It was very sad.”
Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said police have seen a spike in car thefts this year and are investigating whether even more teens are involved.
“It's a little too early to say we've cracked the case,” he said, “but we've definitely made a dent in it.”
By phone, KIRO 7 spoke with the mother of the teen arrested at Maharaja Motors.
She said it was clearly stupid and that her son’s learned a big lesson, but she wouldn’t comment on the other alleged thefts.
Both teens are facing several felony charges.
