BLAINE, Wash. — The Canada Border Services Agency is advising drivers returning to Canada to expect longer than normal waits at the Peace Arch border crossing as there are partial lane closures due to the shooting that injured a border officer.
Canadian authorities told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that the partial closure was due to the infrastructure issues related to the shooting.
Travelers can return to Canada through the Pacific Highway border crossing, which will have all lanes open during peak periods.
On Tuesday afternoon, Lori Bowcock was shot in the neck by Andrew Crews, who then turned the gun on himself.
Customs and Immigration Union President Jean Pierre Fortin said on a Canadian radio show on Wednesday that the shooting may have been an accident.
"Apparently, (he) put the gun toward his head and shot himself in the head, and the bullet went through his head and also hit the throat of one of our officers,” said Fortin.
Bowcock is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
