Robbery, assault suspects arrested after standoff in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood

SEATTLE — Seattle Police spent Thursday morning hauling suspects out of an apartment building at the corner of Madison and Boylston streets.

Abe Abrahamson lives in the Rise Apartments. He saw some of the aftermath of an assault and then a situation where robbery and assault suspects tried to hole up in a room in the apartment building,

“It was about 5 o’clock this morning I came down. There was blood on the floor of the elevator,” said Abrahamson.

Abrahamson said he was just heading out to smoke and walked right into a major police response.

“Came down to the lobby, there was a gentleman with his head wrapped up talking to a couple of paramedics and a cop. (I) came outside (and) noticed there were eight cop cars out here,” he said.

According to an SPD spokesperson, a victim and a group of men were inside the apartment complex when someone in the group assaulted the victim and the rest of the group joined in. They stole from the victim and then barricaded themselves in a room in the building.

Officers arrived and negotiated their surrender. Around 6:30 a.m., we saw at least three men taken into custody and walked out to police vehicles in restraints. The spokesperson said the victim was treated for serious injuries.

Abrahamson lamented the fact that another crime appeared to be centered at his building.

“We have issues here, and it’s a brand new building. It’s only been open for a year…they’ll get into the building and put things in doors and whatnot to allow themselves to get in and out,” he said.

There were no details from police on exactly how many people were taken into custody, but we did see at least five men being questioned. Two of them in the lobby were also restrained.

The response caught Erica Curran’s attention as she was walking her dog.

“We’ve continued to notice it get crazier and crazier the past few years … we’re not too surprised when we tend to see cops,” said Curran.

SPD did not say how the victim and group of men were linked and that the relationship between them was not clear.

Abrahamson said crime in and around the building has been a concern, so he was not too surprised to see polic.

“It’s sad, but I mean it is part of Seattle, I never really thought that this area would be that bad, though. I guess it’s just another day in Seattle.”
