SEATTLE — Safeco Field will be changing its name next year after the end of a 20-year agreement.
According to a news release from the Mariners and Safeco, the naming rights will not be extended beyond the 2018 season.
The Mariners have begun preliminary talks with potential partners for naming rights.
The original agreement was reached in 1998 and the ballpark opened in 1999.
We also should note that for more than six years, KeyBank has not paid for naming rights on KeyArena.
The city said it would be expensive to change signs on and in the building.
However, other properties created for the World's Fair – the Monorail, the Armory (formerly the Center House), etc. – were renamed in 2012 at the city's cost for the 50th anniversary of the Seattle World's Fair.
