Procession route released for fallen deputy Dom Calata’s celebration of life

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has released the procession route for fallen Deputy Dom Calata’s celebration of life on Friday.

He was shot last Tuesday near Spanaway during a SWAT operation to serve an assault warrant on Jeremy Dayton.

Dayton was killed in that shootout.

Calata, who was shot in the head, died a day later.

A second deputy, Sergeant Rich Scaniffe, was also shot and was in critical condition. He continues to recover after being released from the hospital.

The 35-year-old married father patrolled in Edgewood, where the community covered his police SUV with flowers and condolence cards.

Members of the public are encouraged to line the procession route to show their support for Calata.

It will begin at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup at 10:30 a.m. and end at the Church for All Nations in Tacoma at about 12:30 p.m.

  • Vehicles will begin west on Ninth Avenue Southwest
  • Turn left on Fairview Drive
  • Fairview Drive becomes Ninth Street Southwest
  • Turn right on 39th Avenue Southwest
  • 39th Avenue Southwest turns into 112th Street East
  • Arrive at 111 112th Street East, the Church for All Nations, where his memorial will be held at 1 p.m.

On Friday, 112th Street East will be closed from Seventh Avenue South to Pacific Avenue South from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Though the service is open to the public, there is very limited seating at the church.

Family, friends and first responders will have priority for seating.

The members of the public are encouraged to attend at the satellite location: Champions Centre, 1819 E 72nd St. in Tacoma.

A legacy fund has been established in Calata’s memory in partnership with Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers. All funds will go directly to the deputy’s wife and son. Donations can be made on this page.

A support fund has also been established for Scaniffe.

“Sergeant Scaniffe is facing a long journey toward recovery which will require a great deal of support. Donations can be made online or by visiting any TAPCO Credit Union Branch,” the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said.

All funds received will go directly to the sergeant and his family.
