Port of Seattle Police give holiday air travelers tips on keeping your luggage safe

Passengers stranded, bags pile up as Southwest cancels flights CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 27: A massive amount of unclaimed luggage is gathered at the Southwest Airlines Baggage Claim at Midway Airport on December 27, 2022 in Chicago, Illinois. A snowstorm and severe cold front that hit Chicago before the holiday weekend stranded many travelers and their luggage. Southwest Airlines has canceled approximately 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours due to a variety of issues including this year’s historic winter storm and scheduling complications involving crew members. On Monday, Southwest had 10 times more flights canceled than Delta Airlines, which had the second most cancellations nationwide this holiday season. SEATAC, Wash. — The Memorial Day weekend travel rush is already underway, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport officials say people are checking more bags than they did before the pandemic.

If you are flying this week, Port of Seattle Police have some tips on how to keep your bags — and what’s inside them — safe.

If your luggage is small enough to carry on the plane, choose that option. If you can’t do carry-on only, be sure to pack any sentimental, expensive, or important items in a carry-on bag, not in your checked luggage.

That includes such items as medication, jewelry, electronics or anything that is difficult to replace.

You can also consider using an AirTag or similar tracker in your checked baggage. Port of Seattle Police officials say they have used such tags to track bags before.

Lastly, detectives say to make your checked luggage stand out with bright colors, animal-themed luggage covers, or something else that makes it unique.

The idea is that if someone does take your bag, more people may remember the suspect and bag, and it will be easier to identify on security cameras.
