Suspect sought after front-end loader used in attempted ATM theft

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Lynnwood police are searching for a man who attempted to steal an ATM from Chase Bank.

The attempted theft occurred Wednesday evening in the 4000 block of Alderwood Mall Boulevard.

Two hours after the bank closed, a man seen on surveillance allegedly stole a front-end loader from a construction site two blocks away and used it in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the ATM.

“There’s no indication that the … ignition was jimmied, so I’m not sure how he started it,” said Cmdr. Patrick Fagan with the Lynnwood Police Department.

Police said the man rammed the building three times but failed to get any money. He then ran from the scene before officers arrived.

“It’s unusual. It shows either some planning or just some craziness. I’m not sure which,” Fagan said.

Investigators are trying to figure out if the suspect is possibly connected to other ATM thefts that have occurred in the Puget Sound.

While the thief caused plenty of damage and destruction, no one was hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.
