SEATTLE — Panda Fest is returning to Seattle Center August 28 through August 30, bringing thousands of people together to celebrate Asian food, culture, and entertainment. But following the deadly shooting during The Bite of Seattle earlier this summer, organizers say they’ve increased security measures to help keep attendees safe.
The three-day festival takes place at Fisher Pavilion and surrounding areas of Seattle Center. Organizers say more than 60 food vendors will offer over 200 dishes, alongside merchandise vendors, live performances, and interactive cultural activities.
Festival founder Biu Biu Xu said the event’s successful debut in Seattle last year inspired organizers to return.
“We got a huge success, and that gave us big motivation to bring Panda Fest back to Seattle again,” Xu told KIRO 7.
Xu said organizers are expecting as many as 25,000 people over the course of the weekend.
“This year, we have over 50% local vendors to come and support us,” Xu said.
Security has become a major focus for event planners following the deadly shooting that occurred at Seattle Center during The Bite of Seattle festival.
According to Panda Fest organizers, attendees can expect security screening at every entrance. Measures include bag checks and OpenGate metal detection systems designed to screen visitors as they enter festival grounds.
“I feel like safety is the first priority of the events,” Xu said. “Different cities have different regulations and policies, so we feel like it’s safer for everyone to use OpenGate because it’s a fast way to detect anything.”
Seattle Center says safety planning varies depending on the size and needs of each event and can involve collaboration among event producers, venue operators and public safety agencies.
In the event of an emergency, Seattle Center advises attendees to follow instructions from event staff and public safety officials and to report any suspicious activity.
Xu said organizers want security measures to help visitors feel safe without detracting from the festival experience.
“People come to our events because they want us to create a safe environment for them to enjoy the food and music,” Xu said.
Panda Fest is a ticketed event. Organizers encourage attendees to plan for additional time to pass through enhanced security screening before entering the festival.
