Bloomberg reported Thursday night that Seattle-based retailer Nordstrom is moving away from the Ivanka Trump brand.
The upscale department store has seen threats of a boycott over their sale of her merchandise, as well as concern over a potential conflict of interest involving Ivanka's new role as "first Daughter."
In a statement, a spokesperson for Nordstrom said:
"<em>We've said all along we make buying decisions based on performance. We've got thousands of brands – more than 2000 offered on the site alone. Reviewing their merit and making edits is part of the regular rhythm of our business. Each year we cut about 10% and refresh our assortment with about the same amount. In this case, based on the brand's performance we've decided not to buy it for this season."</em>
KIRO 7 went to Nordstrom.com and searched "Ivanka" and found three 3 pairs of discounted women's shoes. Over at the Nordstrom Rack, they had more shoes and one purse online -- all of it on sale.
KIRO 7 went to Twitter to see how the company was handling complaints from disappointed customers.
Many of those complaints call the move political, but the company's tweets reiterate that the move is based only on the brand's performance.
In October of last year, a woman sent an open letter asking Nordstrom to pull the merchandise for political reasons, citing her support of the "#GrabYourWallet" campaign, a movement to boycott business interests with connections to President Trump.
Nordstrom responded then by saying "We hope that offering a vendor's products isn't misunderstood as us taking a political position; we're not. We recognize our customers can make choices about what they purchase based on personal views & we'll continue to give them options."
