SEATTLE — New videos obtained by KIRO 7 show the suspect in a Christmas Day carjacking speaking with troopers after he was arrested.
Police say 24-year-old Alexander Smith was found walking along I-5 near Seattle’s Northgate neighborhood on Christmas Day, 2025.
Today’s newly released videos show Washington State Patrol troopers talking to Smith, trying to find out if he needs medical help.
He eventually takes off running onto I-5.
In a video obtained by KIRO 7 back in December, Smith can be seen pulling a WSP trooper from her car, before jumping in the car himself and taking off, allegedly going 60-80mph.
Dozens of law enforcement officers pursued a miles-long chase along the freeway before troopers finally got him to stop by using a PIT maneuver, and he was arrested on charges of robbery and eluding police.
After being arrested, Smith spent about an hour in the back of a patrol car while officers processed the scene.
The newly released video also shows his conversations in the interrogation room on that Christmas afternoon.
While sitting there, he mentioned that this was “$20 and a drunken mistake”. He also admitted to going to Seattle to smoke meth two days earlier, and at some point, checked in to Harborview Medical Center.
He told detectives he took the car to get home faster instead of using the bus and complimented the trooper who stopped him.
“I had the pedal to the metal, right, but he’s going faster than me! I think his car was a little supped up, more than mine, personally, personally... because you know I was doing pretty good, I thought I could get away,” Smith says in the video.
New court records from the King County Prosecutor’s Office show Smith is on house arrest right now. In a court appearance in January, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial.
Smith’s next court appearance is May 18, where a judge will reevaluate his competency.
