BURIEN, Wash. — There were renewed calls for the justice in Burien where two teen girls were murdered a year ago Thursday night.
Despite intense community interest, no one has ever been arrested in the deaths of 14-year-old Elizabeth Juarez and 19-year-old Eveona Cortez.
The two were killed in a parking lot near the Alturas Apartments in what investigators believe was a gang-related shooting.
Ruben Cortez was one of those who spoke at a candlelight vigil Thursday. He reflected on losing his first born who he said taught him how to love and how to become a man.
“We're living with a huge part of us missing, but do our best we can with our relationship with God to just continue with our healing process and do the best we can with our other three children and try to put things in place to never let something like this happen again,” said Cortez.
King County Sheriff Mitzi G. Johanknecht said significant progress has been made in the case and that it is the highest priority of the Major Crimes Unit.
She said because the investigation is open and active, she was unable to share more details.
