Moving companies in Tacoma fined for illegally operating without permits

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Utilities and Transportation Commission on Monday announced fines for two moving companies they say have been operating without permits in Washington.

Officials said Santamaria Transport, based in Tacoma, received a $5,000 penalty. The commission suspended $4,500 of the penalty on the condition that the company does not operate until it receives a permit.

Tacoma-based Mark Alberto Marrero, known as mark the mover, also received a $5,000 penalty. The commission suspended $4,500 of that penalty on the condition that the company does not operate until it receives a permit.

Officials said people should use caution before hiring a residential moving company and said those interested in doing so should do the following:

Call the commission at 1-888-333-WUTC or click here to verify the company’s permit status and/or check its complaint history.

Compare costs by getting at least two written estimates.

Check online reviews and complaints about the company.

Know the full name, address and phone number of the company.
