FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Family members tell KIRO 7 the little boy hit by a car in Federal Way is 9 year-old Jayshawn Williams.
The third grader has two broken bones in his leg and a broken ankle.
Williams was walking in a crosswalk with his mom and two younger siblings on his way to Panther Lake Elementary when he was hit by a car Thursday morning.
His mom, Melony Rich, saw it happen.
"The next thing I know I see a black car coming really fast so I try to yell 'Jayshawn' but it was too late," said Rich, "My baby flew in the air. The car, at first I didn't know if she was going to stop."
They were just north of the school zone. Police say the yellow crosswalk lights were flashing and the driver failed to yield.
Williams flew into the air and landed face down. As Melony Rich rushed to help her son, she also took a picture of the car who hit him, just in case.
Investigators say the 28-year-old driver was cooperative and distraught. Police say there is no indication she was speeding or distracted. She was cited for "failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk." The amount of the citation is $175.
Williams' family cannot understand why that's the only punishment the driver will face.
"This driver, she just gets to go on with her daily life. My son has a lifetime of recovery and it's not fair," said Rich.
She is worried about Williams' recovery and medical costs.
The little boy likes basketball, video games and the Seahawks. Most of all, his mom says he likes being a big brother.
