Mock plane crash tests first responders at Sea-Tac Airport

SEATAC, Wash. — Preparations are underway for a large emergency exercise at Sea-Tac Airport.

A mock plane crash will test organization and triage skills.

Emergency responders don't know what the scenario is until they arrive at the exercise.

At about 10 a.m., a dramatic scene will unfold around a mock aircraft fuselage which comes from a former Boeing 757 shipped from Moses Lake specifically for the exercise.

Along with first responders from the Port of Seattle fire and police departments and other airport agencies, as many as 150 volunteers will pose as victims injured in a crash, and dozens of King County area police and fire agencies will participate with an estimated 50 -75 pieces of equipment from fire engines to aid cars and up to 175 fire fighters.

The drill will last no longer than 1 p.m., and will not affect or delay any air travel. Both of Sea-Tac's two other runways will be open as normal and the exercise will not affect any customer activity within the terminal.

Residents near the airport may notice emergency vehicles responding as part of the exercise.

The FAA requires all commercial airports to run an emergency drill every three years.
