License plate readers to be installed in Tukwila

TUKWILA, Wash. — Automated license plate reading cameras will be installed in parts of Tukwila.

The Tukwila Police Department said it will install 35 cameras to reduce crime and help locate missing people.

The cameras take photos of vehicles’ license plates. If a stolen car or one associated with a wanted suspect is detected, the camera will immediately send an alert to police.

Law enforcement is also alerted when a vehicle is associated with a missing person, Amber Alert or Silver Alert is detected.

Personally identifiable information, such as photos of drivers or other occupants in vehicles, is not taken by the cameras, which only photographs plates and vehicle characteristics.

Tukwila police said that seven in 10 crimes are committed with a vehicle and the cameras will help provide evidence for investigations and decrease violent and property crimes.

Information from the cameras will not be used for minor traffic or parking infractions.
