Fire officials share importance of water safety after recent drownings

There is a new emphasis on water safety after a recent string of drownings in Western Washington.

Bellevue fire officials told KIRO 7 they have taken resources to remind people that our waterways and bodies of water are a source to cool and no matter your swimming skill level, safety is paramount.

"We've had four adult males that have tragically had drowning accidents and passed away," said Lt. Camari Olson, with the Bellevue Fire Department.

Having monitors to keep an eye on swimmers, and wearing life vests are just a start.

"Our water is cold, and that can make your muscles not work as well, it can make you weak. And going out far into the water without a life vest can have devastating results," said Olson.

Three men drowned in July and one man died Tuesday.
