Driver leaves after car ends up inside Spanaway building

SPANAWAY, Wash. — A car ended up fully inside a building in Spanaway and the driver left the crash scene.

It happened at Pacific Ave S and 161st St S around 2 a.m. Tuesday at a former Payless Shoe Source store. It is now a medical equipment sales business.

The owner of the property said he was working when the crash happened.

“I was on site working and I heard a loud crash, so I came out to check and see what was going on. I couldn’t decipher what that noise could be. And that’s when I discovered the car sitting inside the showroom floor,” said owner Roy Hoard.

The car crashed through a metal barrier fence before slamming through the building, leaving a trail of rubble, glass and bricks.

Hoard said he saw two men standing outside the car after the crash. One was the driver and the other said he was a passerby who came to help the driver.

Neither man waited for police to arrive, but Hoard said before officers arrived, the driver came back three times to get items he left inside the car.

“It’s a little disheartening just for the fact that they didn’t stick around to, you know, be held accountable,” said Hoard.

The owner said he was concerned a fire would start.

Hoard gave KIRO 7 surveillance video of the crash and a still image of the men who were at the car after the crash.

A Washington State Patrol trooper and a Pierce County deputy came to the scene and the car was towed away.
