Heavy rain causes flooding in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — I-705 northbound was closed for hours because of standing water and Stadium High School’s football field was flooded Sunday afternoon.

"We just had a large amount of rain come down in a very short period of time,” said Trooper Brooke Bova with Washington State Patrol.

A Tacoma Schools spokesperson told KIRO 7 that two pickup trucks worth of dirt ended up on the field, washed down by water.

"The roadways system, it just overwhelmed it,” said Troy Ihlen with City of Tacoma.

He said he and other crews were responding to reports of standing water and clearing drains throughout the evening.
