First Boeing 787 rolls out of South Carolina plant

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The first Dreamliner rolled off Boeing's South Carolina assembly line today with much fanfare.

Gov. Nikki Haley, U.S. Rep. Lindsey Graham and Boeing executives gathered for the occasion.

As smoke poured from the doors of the company's final assembly plant, the white plane was pulled out onto the tarmac.

Boeing employs about 6,000 at the plant and it seemed most were on hand to cheer the speeches and the unveiling of the airliner.

Boeing wants to build 10 787s a month by late next year. Most will still be built in Everett, but South Carolina is expected to produce three a month by the end of 2013.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Lee Stoll was the only Seattle television reporter there, and will have coverage beginning at 5 p.m.

The $750 million Charleston plant, which opened last summer, represents the largest single industrial investment in South Carolina history.
