Facebook creating drone designed to connect remote parts of world

A solar-powered drone that has the wingspan of a Boeing 737 is designed to bring Internet connectivity to remote parts of the world.

The creator of the drone, Facebook, says it doesn't plan to operate the drone, just design the technology and hopefully sell it to a telecommunications company.

Test flights are expected to begin later this year.

The drone is as big as a 737 but weighs less than a Toyota Prius. It is outfitted with lasers to send Internet signals to the ground.

The drone can fly for up to three months between 60,000 and 90,000 feet, far above commercial planes and thunderstorms.
