Driver flees Mount Vernon police, crashes vehicle

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A 23-year-old man was taken into custody after trying to flee police Saturday night in Mount Vernon.

At 8:36 p.m., police tried to stop a driver in a black Honda Accord in the area of South 20th Street and Section Street because of erratic and reckless driving. The driver did not stop and then officers lost sight of the vehicle.

At about 8:50 p.m. an officer found the vehicle driving erratically near East Division and 21st streets. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated to speeds of 40 to 50 mph and continued driving.

Police said the vehicle then crashed at the first corner from East Division Street onto Mount Vernon Big Lake Road.

When officers arrived, they saw the driver running away from the scene. He was then taken into custody. The driver was booked for investigation of eluding and reckless endangerment.

There were two passengers in the vehicle and they were not injured.

Troopers will continue to investigate the crash.
