Rape suspect's wife working as judge in Seattle

Jennifer Grant, who may have tampered with evidence in the rape case against her husband, Danford Grant, is now sitting on the judge's bench, deciding the fate of others, KIRO 7 reporter Amy Clancy found.

SEATTLE — Jennifer Grant, a former supervisory prosecutor for the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, “was appointed by the bench to serve in a limited capacity as a Pro Tem Magistrate in September, 2013,” according to an e-mail statement from Gary Ireland, executive assistant to the court administrator.

Grant has not been charged with a crime, but as Clancy first reported earlier this week, recent documents filed by the King County Prosecutor's office reveal that Grant admitted to moving her husband's Honda Pilot twice after he was arrested in September 2012 for raping multiple women at Seattle-area massage clinics. Detectives wanted to search the car for evidence, but Jennifer Grant and criminal defense attorney David Allen did not reveal the location of the car for nearly a month.

Grant also admitted to taking her husband's office keycard and wedding ring from the vehicle -- but denied taking anything else.

Jennifer Grant resigned her position as a supervising prosecutor for the Seattle City Attorney's office in June, months before the results of an internal investigation were made public, and long before the prosecutor in her husband's case determined "relocation of the car and the removal of items is potentially evidence of consciousness of guilt and/or tampering with evidence."

Clancy’s requests for on-camera interviews with Seattle Municipal Court Presiding Judge C. Kimi Kondo and Court Public Information Officer Gary Ireland were denied on Friday.

Instead, Ireland sent an e-mail stating Jennifer Grant was "appointed after an extensive evaluation of her qualifications" and a "criminal background check." Read Ireland's full e-mail below.

While at Seattle Municipal Court on Friday, Clancy met Dawnell Erie, who said she recognized Jennifer Grant as soon as she walked into the courtroom for Erie's husband's domestic violence-related case.

“I was really angry when I walked in the courtroom and saw her name, because I’ve heard about her,” Erie said.  “I don’t feel she has any right to be on a bench, judging people.”

Danford Grant’s rape trial is scheduled for May.

KIRO 7's coverage on the Danford Grant case:

The text of Ireland's statement is below.

Dear Ms. Clancy:

I am following up on behalf of Seattle Municipal Court regarding your inquiry about Pro Tem Magistrate Jennifer Grant.  Ms. Grant was appointed by the bench to serve in a limited capacity as a Pro Tem Magistrate in September, 2013. Ms. Grant was appointed after an extensive evaluation of her qualifications, standing with the Washington State Bar Association and a criminal background check. Seattle Municipal Court Magistrates handle civil traffic infraction cases.

At this time, Seattle Municipal Court has no further comment on this matter.

Best regards,

Gary
