Case of accused cop killer goes to jury

SEATTLE — The case of accused cop killer Christopher Monfort is in the hands of the jury Monday.

They have 314 exhibits available for review.

Monfort is charged with murder, arson and attempted murder.

Prosecutors say Monfort stalked two officers, Timothy Brenton and Britt Kelly (maiden name Sweeney), while they were making a traffic stop on Oct. 31, 2009. As they later pulled over to discuss the traffic stop, Monfort allegedly pulled up alongside their parked car and fired at them, killing Brenton.

He is also accused of bombing police vehicles and a mobile precinct at the Charles Street vehicle yard on Oct. 22, 2009.

KIRO 7 discovered the prosecution has spent over $1 million on the case as of the end of April.

The figure does not include the extensive research and forensic investigation various agencies did at their own cost.

The King County public defender's office told KIRO 7 it has spent $5.8 million through March in Monfort's defense. The costs include all salaries and benefits for the attorneys, paralegals and investigators working on the case. The total also includes overhead costs like pro-rated rent for office space.
