Bellingham man sentenced in fatal horseplay shooting

Masen Potter

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A man charged with killing the son of a Bellingham city councilman while playing with a gun last year was sentenced to nearly six years in prison as part of a plea deal Wednesday.

Investigators say Masen Potter, Aaron Bornemann and three other men had been drinking and using drugs on April 2, 2015, when they removed the clip in a .22 caliber handgun and started dry firing it at objects inside Potter’s rental home.

A police investigation suggests that at some point, Bornemann, 22, loaded the gun without Potter knowing.

Bornemann, who was 23, is the son of Bellingham City Council member Terry Bornemann.
