Rags 'spontaneously combusted' before brush fire that threatened home

Seattle firefighters battled a brush fire in the Arbor Heights area of West Seattle.

SEATTLE — Seattle firefighters successfully put out a brush fire that threatened homes in the Arbor Heights area of West Seattle Monday afternoon.

Fifty firefighters responded to the fire, which burned two acres near the 10900 block of 39th Avenue Southwest.

No homes were burned or damaged as a result of the fire.

Investigators determined the fire was accidentally caused by the improper disposal of rags doused in furniture-staining chemicals. The stained rags were left in direct sunlight and spontaneously combusted.
