SEATTLE, Wash. — A week after barely escaping a struggling San Diego Chargers team, the Seahawks take on their biggest rival in arguably the biggest game of the season, so far.
Many questions from last week still remain this week. The running back room nearly gained a veteran in Joe Mixon, but after his signing fell through, the Seahawks turned to the Commanders’ Robert Henry Jr. to give them just a bit more depth.
As for the other running backs, Zach Charbonnet is still not fully prepared to return, Jadarian Price is on the injured reserve list, and George Holani is dealing with injuries to his ribs and knee. Holani was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report, after practicing in limited capacity throughout the week.
Emmanuel Wilson played well last week, and now, as the Seahawks’ starting running back, Wilson is going to have to continue playing effectively, if not, better than he has been.
On the other side of the ball, the defense is welcoming not one, but two additions this week.
Safety Ty Okada is back and set to make his season debut against the 49ers. The Seahawks’ secondary has fluctuated in quality this season, and Okada’s return might be a key piece of getting it back into shape.
Veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs is also ready to go after sitting back on the practice squad and familiarizing himself with the team. The Seahawks placed rookie cornerback Julian Neal on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, so Diggs’ promotion is not just good timing, it’s necessary.
Although the Seahawks destroyed the 49ers in their last match-up, a 41-6 blowout back in last year’s NFC Divisional Championship, this is a different, healthier 49ers team.
Sitting at the top of the NFC West, the 49ers are 4-0, with an effective Brock Purdy-led offense. Purdy is tied for first in the league for total touchdowns, with 11, and holds the current title of highest quarterback rating -- 89.2, according to ESPN.
While one wishes for a repeat of that NFC Divisional Championship game, it’s hard to repeat. If the Seahawks clean up their mistakes from last week, establish a strong running game, and shake off the rust in the secondary, then repeating is going to be a lot easier.
If they don’t, Sunday’s game is going to be interesting.
The Seahawks face the 49ers Sunday at Lumen Field. Kickoff is set for 1:25 p.m.
