The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game after headbutting Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV following a late hit on the Seahawks sideline.

“During the second quarter, Greenlaw used his helmet to headbutt Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to ‘any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,’ ” the league said in a statement on Monday.

Sunday’s infraction happened during the second quarter, when Seahawks’ quarterback Sam Darnold scrambled and was hit late by Greenlaw after going out of bounds, leading to a personal foul.

Greenlaw will miss San Francisco’s game next Monday night against the Washington Commanders, pending an appeal.

Greenlaw has a history of infractions. Last week, he was was fined $11,941 for taunting the Broncos’ sideline in a win.

Last season, Greenlaw was suspended for one game last season when he played in Denver for berating an official after a win over the New York Giants.

He also had a sideline altercation with Philadelphia’s head of security Dom DiSandro in 2023 and was disqualified for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Chargers’ Justin Herbert in 2022.
