Volunteer teacher accused of hitting elementary student in dispute over Pokémon cards

DOTHAN, Ala. — A volunteer teacher at a South Alabama elementary school is accused of striking a student after an argument involving Pokémon cards, authorities said.

According to a news release from the Dothan Police Department, Oscar Truitt Jr., 77, of Dothan was arrested on Monday. He faces one charge of harassment, police said.

The alleged incident occurred at Jerry Lee Faine Elementary School in Dothan, WTVY reported.

Truitt serves as a volunteer teacher for the Dothan City Schools system, according to the television station.

According to the police news release, video surveillance showed Truitt striking the child, who was under the age of 10, several times during the altercation.

The child was not injured, WDHN reported.

Truitt was arrested and booked into the Dothan City Jail, police said.

“The safety of students is the top priority of the Dothan Police Department’s role in Dothan City Schools,” Dothan police Chief William E. Benny said in a statement.
