Three dog foods sold at Family Dollar nationally recalled for deadly toxin

BATON ROUGE — Three types of dog food sold at Family Dollar stores nationally are being recalled after a deadly toxin was found in them.

Sunshine Mills issued a voluntary recall for Family Pet Meaty Cuts Beef Chicken and Cheese, Heartland Farms Grilled Favorites Beef Chicken and Cheese and Paws Happy Life Butcher’s Choice Dog food for elevated levels of aflatoxin, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin found in grains like corn and can cause toxicity or death, according to food safety officials.

The discovery of the toxin was made during a routine testing of the food, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Feed Program.

“This type of testing is all part of our regular efforts to protect animal and public health,” Mike Strain, commissioner of agriculture and forestry, said in a statement. “Aflatoxin is a potent carcinogen that in this case could have been harmful to pets.”
