Spike Lee’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ free to rent, includes discussion on race, change

In light of the Black Lives Matter movement sweeping across the country, Spike Lee’s film “Do the Right Thing” will be offered for free rental this week to help advance the discussion of race and police brutality in America.

The movie will be available through Sunday on Amazon, Apple, Charter, Comcast, Google, Redbox, Vudu and other platforms for free streaming, The Associated Press reported.

Thursday night at 8 p.m. EDT, the American Film Institute will host a discussion with Lee on YouTube.

AFI President Bob Gazzale said the film “is a timeless and timely classic,” but didn’t specifically mention protests spurred by the death of George Floyd. Gazzale also said Lee “has forever proven himself the voice for change that we need now more than ever.”

Do the Right Thing” was nominated for two Academy Awards after it’s 1989 release, including Best Original Screenplay for Lee and is listed on the 100 greatest films list compiled by AFI. It starred Lee, Giancarlo Esposito, Ossie Davis and Danny Aiello.
