Recall alert: Mold byproduct prompts expanded dog food recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded a previously announced dog food recall because products may contain unsafe levels of aflatoxin, known to cause illness and death in pets.

Sunshine Mills' expanded voluntary recall affects dog foods distributed in the United States, Japan and Colombia, the FDA stated.

The original recall was issued over concerns the products contained above-limit levels of aflatoxin, which the FDA said at the time is a “naturally occurring mold byproduct from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.”

Among the products included in the expanded recall are Principle Super Premium Natural Dog Food, exported exclusively to a distributor in Japan, and Sportsman’s Pride Maintenance Adult Formula Dog Food, exported to a distributor in Japan and Colombia.

According to the FDA, pets with aflatoxin toxicity, also known as aflatoxicosis, often exhibit symptoms such as sluggishness or lethargy, “combined with a reluctance to eat; vomiting; yellowish tint to the eyes or gums; diarrhea; and, in some cases, death.”

On Sept. 2, Sunshine Mills recalled certain Family Pet, Heartland Farms and Paws Happy Life products after a retail product sample was found by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry to contain an unsafe level of aflatoxin.

The company expanded the recall Oct. 8 to include certain Champ, Field Trial, Good Dog, Hunter’s Special, Old Glory, Paws Happy Life, Pet Expert, Principle, Retriever, River Bend, Sportsman’s Pride, Sprout, Thrifty, Top Runner and Whiskers & Tails products.
