Philip, 99, was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital, where he’s expected to remain for the next few days for observation and rest, officials said.

Unidentified sources told The Guardian that Philip traveled to the hospital by car and that his hospitalization was “not an emergency admission.” The newspaper reported Philip’s illness was not related to the novel coronavirus.

Philip retired from public life in 2017, though palace officials said at the time the decision was due to his age and not related to his health, the Associated Press reported. He still appears alongside his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, and other members of the British royal family at public events and church services.

In recent years, Philip has dealt with a number of health issues. He underwent treatment in 2011 for a blocked coronary artery after complaining of chest pains, The Guardian reported. The next year, he was hospitalized for several days with a bladder infection, according to the newspaper.

He was also hospitalized in 2013 for abdominal surgery and in 2014 for surgery to his right hand, BBC News reported. In 2018, the duke was hospitalized to undergo surgery for his hip, CNN reported. More recently, Philip was briefly hospitalized in December 2019 for treatment of an unspecified preexisting condition.
