Firefighters were called around 1:13 a.m. to find smoke coming through the windows at First Works Baptist Church, KCBS reported.

“It appeared that the walls to the church had been vandalized as well as all the windows at first appeared to be smashed,” El Monte Police Lt. Christopher Cano said. “Then, we realized that the windows were not smashed, that they had actually blown out from some type of explosion.”

The FBI agents and investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office called it an improvised explosive device attack, CNN reported.

It is unclear if evidence of an explosive device was found. No other details have been released. There were no injuries reported.

The church is led by Pastor Bruce Mejia who has condemned same-sex marriage, KCBS reported. The church has been the site of protests in recent weeks. A protest planned for Sunday has been canceled.
