Babysitter accused of murder in toddler’s death dies after collapsing in jail

EL RENO, Okla. — An Oklahoma babysitter charged with first-degree murder in a toddler’s death has died after she collapsed in a jail shower over the weekend, authorities said.

According to the El Reno Tribune, Lesley Hendrix, who had been jailed in Canadian County since January 2016, collapsed while showering Sunday and later died at a nearby hospital, Sheriff Chris West told the newspaper.

Hendrix’s death came nearly five years after 23-month-old Isabella Little Elk, whom Hendrix had been babysitting, suffered blunt-force trauma that caused a brain bleed, which killed the child, authorities said. A doctor said the girl’s injuries appeared to have resulted from abuse and must have occurred while Hendrix, then 32, was watching the child, the Tribune reported.

Hendrix’s trial had been delayed, according to the newspaper.
