NEW YORK — A woman threw her two children out of a New York City apartment before jumping out herself, authorities said Saturday.
All three were taken to an area hospital with a 1-month-old child listed in critical condition, WNBC reported.
Update 12:35 a.m. EDT June 13: The woman was identified by authorities as Dejhanny Jarrell, 24, WPIX reported. She was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child, the television station reported.
Original report: The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, according to WPIX. Police said the woman pushed an air conditioning unit out of the six-story unit, then threw the infant and a 2-year-old child out of the second-story window, according to the television station.
The 24-year-old woman then leaped naked from the building, WABC reported.
Carl Chin, whose apartment window faces the alley where the children were thrown, at first thought the incident was an accident.
“I was sitting in my bedroom and first I heard a baby crying and then we heard a loud thunk, like a body hit the ground,” Chin told WNBC. “After (the mom) landed and fell on the floor, she got up and picked the baby up by the leg and dropped her at least two times. So I jumped over the fence and basically wrestled with her to get the child.”
The condition of the toddler and the woman were described as stable, WPIX reported.
It was not clear what led to the incident, police said.
