Jack Sherman, early Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, dead at 64

Jack Sherman, an early guitarist for pioneering rock group the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has died. He was 64.

The cause of death was not released, CNN reported.

"We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed," the group said on social media. "Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA. He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform."

Sherman replaced Hillel Slovak, a founding member of the band, in 1983. Slovak rejoined the group in 1985. Sherman did contribute to some of the band's later albums including "The Abbey Road EP" and "Mother's Milk," the BBC reported.

Sherman was critical of the group when he was not asked to join them in 2012 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Billboard reported.
