Horse that ran away with herd of wild mustangs 8 years ago reunited with owner

FIELDING, Utah — Eight years ago, a Utah man thought he had lost his horse forever in Utah’s West Desert until he got a call last week from authorities.

Shane Adams told KUTV that the Bureau of Land Management found his horse “Mongo” while rounding up mustangs in Tooele County, west of Salt Lake City. The BLM said it noticed that one horse acted differently and found an identifying brand. The brand matched the one Adams had reported eight years earlier.

Adams told the station about the day Mongo escaped and his effort to find his horse.

Mongo had been tied up outside Adam’s tent on a spring morning eight years ago when a herd of wild mustangs ran by. Mongo broke away from the tent and joined the herd before Adams could stop him.

Adams told KUTV that he returned to the area every weekend for three years to find Mongo. He notified everyone in the area about Mongo, including the BLM, but eventually couldn’t afford to keep searching.

Now back home, Mongo is 18 years old and underweight but acts as if nothing happened.

“It’s crazy he still acts the same, same horse. Eight years of being wild, and he acts like nothing ever happened,” Adams told KUTV.
