Grandmother charges children, grandchildren for Christmas dinner

Money is tight for many families this year, but they’re still determined to have a holiday celebration.

One grandmother has come up with a way to still be able to afford the family get-together. She’s charging her children and even grandchildren for the Christmas dinner she’s hosting.

Caroline Duddridge of Fairwater, Wales, is hosting about a dozen people this year and will be spreading out a buffet on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so she’s charging her family for the food, Wales Online reported.

Duddridge said she’s not making a profit, just asking them to contribute to the feasts.

This isn’t the first time she’s done it either. She started back in 2015 when her husband died and she had lost her job so she asked her kids to put a couple of pounds into a jar for the weeks leading up to Christmas, but not everyone paid, or paid their fair share, Wales Online reported.

She made it easier, setting a specific price per person, based on age, with it due by Dec. 1, transferred directly to her bank account, BBC News reported.

Her two sons, who both work full-time, pay £15 each, and her three daughters who work part-time each pay £10. Four grandchildren over the age of 5 are charged £5 each while her two younger grandchildren are charged half — £2.50.

Most of the money paid goes to meat, which Duddridge doesn’t eat since she’s a vegetarian, BBC News and Wales Online reported.

All the meals spread over the holiday weekend cost Duddridge about £300 or about $361.

It also helps Duddridge plan the meals, knowing exactly what is purchased instead of everyone bringing a dish.

She told BBC News that she “always ended up with hundreds of sausage rolls and bags of potatoes but not much else.”
