ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A Florida man and woman who were caregivers for a 3-year-old girl are facing murder and child abuse charges after police said they threw the child against a wall, causing her death.
Monica L. Williams, 33, and Daquan Marquell Lindsey, 25, both of St. Petersburg, were arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brandy Crews, according to Pinellas County online court records. Williams also was charged with four counts of child neglect and three counts of child abuse, according to Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office online booking records. Lindsey also was charged with two additional counts of child abuse with great bodily harm.
All of the charges are felonies, online records show.
According to arrest affidavits, Crews suffered severe head injuries and was unresponsive on Tuesday when paramedics arrived, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Williams and Lindsey waited 40 minutes after the girl was thrown against the wall to call 911, according to the newspaper.
It was unclear which adult is accused of throwing Crews against the wall, since the affidavits are redacted, according to the Times.
According to a news release from the St. Petersburg Police Department, Crews had multiple cuts, burns and injuries on her body in various stages of healing, WTSP-TV reported.
Crews also had been hit with a belt until she was “bloody and swollen countless times in the past,” according to the affidavit.
The girl died from her injuries on Friday, according to the television station.
Another boy found in the care of Williams and Lindsey had injuries that police said were not believed to be life-threatening, WTVT reported.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department news release, there were four children in the residence. A boy and two other children under the age of 14 were removed from the home, the Times reported.
Williams and Lindsey remain in the Pinellas County Jail, online records show.
