The unidentified body had been placed into a shopping bag inside the shopping cart where it was found in a mostly industrial area, The New York Times reported.

A person walking by happened to see the body early Thursday, with sources telling WNBC the person who found it started pushing the cart believing there could be items of worth inside the bag.

The victim has not been identified. The medical examiner said it would try to determine the woman’s identity and cause of death, WABC reported.

Detectives told WNBC they are using DNA to try to identify the victim, since there are no ways to match dental or fingerprint records. Detectives also told the station there were no identifying marks or tattoos on the body.

“It’s getting worse and worse,” Sung Hong, who owns a nearby store, told The New York Times. “I don’t know what’s going on. It’s like people have become crazy.”

Police have not made any arrests.
