According to a company press release, the vaccine will first be sent to locations that reach customers in underserved communities with limited access to health care.

“Ninety percent of the country lives within 10 miles of a Walmart. We’re at the heart of many rural and underserved communities, and we are committed to providing access to vaccines as groups become eligible,” Dr. Cheryl Pegus, Executive Vice President, Health & Wellness, said.

“Vaccinations to achieve widespread immunity are important for re-opening across the country. We’re proud to work together with the federal government, states, communities, customers and associates to reach that goal.”

Walmart has partnered with the Federal Retail Pharmacy program to set up the vaccination programs in the 22 states. The company has been giving vaccinations in other states under state vaccination programs.

The Federal Retail Pharmacy program is being rolled out this week with 1 million doses to be shared between 6,500 pharmacies across the country.

According to details about the federal program, the number of locations able to offer COVID vaccines should grow to 40,000 as more vaccine becomes available. To see the list of pharmacies that are currently participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy program, click here.
