According to a news release from the Irvine Police Department, the child, whose name has not been released, was struck by a black Honda Odyssey at about 8:05 p.m. Thursday at the Cross Creek Apartments. She was taken to an area hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Irvine police Sgt. Karie Davies told The Orange County Register that the girl was riding the scooter on the sidewalk when she was hit by the minivan, which was approaching an exit to the complex. It was unclear whether the child was wearing a helmet.

Davies said that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor in the collision, KCBS-TV reported.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, KTTV reported.

The crash occurred more than two months after a 23-month-old girl was killed by an Amazon delivery van on Aug. 16 in Irvine.

The parents of the child filed a lawsuit against Amazon and the Irvine Company after the incident, which occurred at another apartment complex, according to the Register.

The suit alleges the driver made an unsafe turn in a “poorly designed, dangerously maintained” parking lot and alleyway.

Irvine police are still investigating that collision, the newspaper reported.

Thursday’s investigation is ongoing, police said.
