9/11 firefighter Daniel Foley who searched for fallen FDNY brother from rubble dies of 9/11-related cancer

A New York City firefighter has succumbed to cancer related to the work he did at Ground Zero after 9/11.

Daniel Foley had pancreatic cancer, which doctors said was caused by the carcinogens that were found in the rubble of the World Trade Center’s towers.

Foley spent the months after the attacks on America digging through the concrete and steel looking for victims.

One of the victims was his own brother, Thomas, who was also a member of the FDNY, WCBS reported.

Thomas Foley, a volunteer firefighter and a member of Rescue Co. 3 based in the South Bronx, was found 10 days after the attack. The company lost eight members during 9/11, The Journal News reported.

Daniel Foley was also part of the same company in which his brother served. He was cited 10 times for bravery, WNBC reported.

Daniel Foley received his cancer diagnosis on Feb. 24, 2019, almost 18 years after his service after 9/11. He died on Feb. 22, The Journal News reported.

According to the World Trade Center Health Program, the number of people who died from 9/11-related illnesses was 2,691 as of December.

Along with cancer, some of the other illnesses related to 9/11 include asthma, sleep apnea, COPD and PTSD, the World Trade Center Health Program reported.
