Man leads police on chase from Dupont to Tacoma, troopers say

TACOMA, Wash. — Troopers said a fleeing driver led them on a chase that stretched from Dupont to Tacoma early Friday.

Officers say the chase started on northbound I-5 near Mounts Road in Dupont at about 1:30 a.m. after a State Patrol trooper tried to stop a driver who was possibly driving under the influence.

The driver failed to pull over and fled at a high rate of speed.

Troopers pursued the driver, but when he continued to speed into a construction zone, troopers ended the chase for safety reasons.

Once out of the construction zone, the pursuit picked up again, and officers deployed spike strips at South 56th Street in Tacoma, which flattened the car’s back tires.

The driver then exited at I-705 and got onto SR 509. Troopers say the car then crashed, rolled over and caught fire near Taylor Way.

Troopers took the driver into custody. He was checked out at Tacoma General Hospital for minor injuries.

The suspect was booked into jail for investigation of felony eluding. He also has a felony US Marshal warrant.
