Deputies searching for driver who hit student in crosswalk

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — Disturbing video shows a car crashing into a teen in Thurston County and taking off.

The young woman had the right of way in the crosswalk, according to deputies.

"I spun like a baton. It was crazy, just right over the headlight. My head was, like, that far away from the back tire,. I'm lucky to be here," said Nyah Hart.

Hart said she went into shock the second a fast-moving, dark-colored car crashed into her in the middle of the crosswalk.

The crash sent her flying onto the hood. She landed headfirst on the ground.

The driver took off.

"I don't know what went through your mind, but I was scared for my life," said Hart.

The crash happened at the corner of Pacific Avenue Southeast and Steilacoom Road Southeast around 1:40 p.m. Monday.

Thurston County Sheriff's Office Lt. Ray Brady said the car is an early 2000s sedan that's brown or metallic colored. It has some damage and is missing a back hubcap.

Leading up to the crash, the car was turning left. The driver had a green light but not the right of way.

"It would be the responsibility of the turning vehicle from Steilacoom Road, even with the green light, to observe for pedestrians in the crosswalk and to stop and avoid them," said Brady.

Moments after the crash, surveillance video shows other drivers getting out of their cars and hurrying to Hart's side. A few minutes later, an ambulance arrives on the scene.

Paramedics rushed the young woman to the hospital. She fractured her leg, is covered in bruises and road rash, and likely has a concussion.

"I've had pounding headaches all over the place at random points," said Hart. "There was a gash, like this big, on my left toe. I couldn't feel that for, like, three days."

Hart will be in a leg brace for months.

"I really hope he or she feels so guilty right now," said Hart.

Deputies said once the driver is caught, he or she will likely face felony charges.
