180-unit apartments coming to Tacoma's Brewery District

TACOMA, Wash. — An economic boom is hitting Tacoma’s Brewery District.

“I love it. I love seeing Tacoma becoming a place that people are excited about. I love that the younger people are moving to the area and it’s just feeling a lot hipper and more fun,” said Lauren Edwards.

“It’s getting too big,” said Jason. “It’s just another site, you know. People got to have housing, OK. I got my apartment, I’m good.”

The project is called the Jefferson Flats.

It sits on the south edge of University of Washington Tacoma’s campus. It will add 180 units of market-rate apartments, with everything from studios to three-bedroom penthouse units with rooftop patios.

The developer bought the property 10 years ago. They also plan to add a rooftop courtyard and three levels of parking, which people said downtown Tacoma desperately needs.

“Just more parking, more breweries, more places to go with trendier places to eat,” said Eric Roca.

Just a block down the road, a crane is up and construction crews are hard at work on the Tacoma Town Center, which will add retail space, housing and offices.

“A more diverse setting, you know, a lot more different things than just the regular old Starbucks would be nice,” said Roca.

The developer of Jefferson Flats said they plan to start construction on the lot in early 2020. Units should be available in 2021.
