Tukwila semi crash causes massive traffic jam on I-5

TUKWILA, Wash. — A semi crash on northbound Interstate 5 in Tukwila caused a massive traffic jam that stretched for ten miles.  All lanes reopened at 8:15 a.m.

The UPS truck full of packages crashed into the guardrail and rolled over about 5 a.m. Thursday just past State Route 599. Traffic was backed up for miles, all the way to Federal Way.

All but the HOV lane was closed for three hours and the drive time from Kent to Seattle was two hours.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

Packages were offloaded onto other UPS trucks and tow trucks at the scene pulled the truck into the upright position and after several hours, towed it away.

Tom Pearce with the Washington State Department of Transportation said an expansion joint was damaged in two lanes by the crash.  It was repaired shortly before 8 a.m.
